Time to Read: 4 hours
Review:
With all the hype around the upcoming movie, I decided to finally pick up The Housemaid. At just under 300 pages, it was the perfect size for a binge — I finished it over a few quick sessions.
What Worked
It’s an easy, fast-paced read with short chapters that pull you along. The domestic-thriller tension delivers, and there are a few satisfyingly vicious moments. What surprised me most was the layered villainy: the book plays with complicity, survival, and the ways abuse can force impossible choices. I can see why so many readers devoured it.
What Didn’t Work
I wanted more from the twist — I had suspicions early, so the reveal didn’t knock me sideways. One late twist at the very end felt a little too convenient and pulled me out of the moment. And because I’ve been beta-reading a lot lately, I caught a small inconsistency that made me laugh at myself — apparently I cannot switch off the editor brain even during a popcorn thriller.
Who This Book Is For
Readers who love quick, bingeable domestic thrillers with messy morality and shifting loyalties. If you’re okay with a few plausibility wobbles in exchange for momentum and drama, this will absolutely scratch the itch.
Final Thoughts
The Housemaid wasn’t my favorite, but it was a breezy, addictive read. I wish the twist packed a bigger punch, yet I appreciated the way it complicates “villain” vs. “victim” and shows how survival can blur those lines.
